Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS)
Hidden in Plain Sight is a free community initiative and is suitable for parents, grandparents, other community members and any adult who works with or cares for and about young people. A replica of a teenager’s bedroom will be on display for participants to browse and observe, becoming familiar with where and how teens might hide drugs or paraphernalia. Seemingly innocent items commonly used by youth could actually indicate a substance use problem.
It will allow you to be more knowledgeable and proactive in helping a young person who might be using drugs, but also prevent youth from even starting. Parent engagement and conversation starters and tips will also be shared.
This event is hosted by Hanover Cares and Teens Care Too Coalition, which is comprised of Hanover County high school students dedicated to educating their peers and parents about the dangers of substance use.
The success of this event is due to the collaboration of the coalition’s community partners. The coalition partners with the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, Hanover County Public Schools and Hanover Community Services to bring you this eye-opening event.
Because of the sensitive nature of Hidden in Plain Sight, it is not suitable for children.
There is no cost to attend the event, however pre-registration is required. The event will have limited availability to ensure safety and accommodate all COVID-19 protocols. The event venue does require masks to be worn while attending this event.
